With a extensive menu that isn’t just for the steak lovers amongst us, mojitos on tap and a freakin’ ice cream machine, Son of Steak has definitely brought something new to the Nottingham foodie scene since opening its doors last year. Situated in Trinity Square, it’s described as the next generation of steak; great tasting steak but without the fuss. A couple of weeks ago I was invited down to try out the new menu so come and take a look at what I thought!
Featuring a rustic interior with strong industrial details, the relaxed atmosphere in Son of Steak makes it the perfect spot to head to after a busy work day with friends or to pop into before a cinema date on the weekend. The order at the bar policy means it feels a lot less stuffy than most other restaurants priding themselves on the quality of their steak and the speed of the service is exceptional so it’s a brilliant choice if you’re in a hurry!
After perusing the menu we decided to keep it light with the starters and just have some olives to pick at along with our drinks. One of Son of Steak’s real highlights and something that I can definitely get on board with are their mojitos on tap! I chose to make mine into a Passion Fruit Mojito as I just love a fruity cocktail but you can also choose to add mango or strawberry. It’s the perfect summer drink and I’ll definitely be stopping by once the weather heats up again to enjoy a couple whilst sitting out in the sunshine!
I can probably count on one hand the amount of times in my life I’ve tried steak (one of them being at a previous Son of Steak event which was very tasty) as I’m really not the biggest red meat fan so I was pretty pleased to discover that the menu had a whole host of other options too. From the new menu I chose the Bumbu Bali marinated chicken which is inspired by Indonesian cuisine and roasted through a charcoal Josper oven. I’m a real wuss when it comes to spice so when choosing my level of heat I ended up going for sticky paprika which was delicious although one of the waitresses highly recommended the Coconut and Lime Bumbu so that’s definitely one to try next time!
My most difficult decision came when choosing my side dishes as there was just SO much choice. After much deliberation I settled on two of the gourmet sides; mac ‘n’ cheese as its my real obsession at the moment along with a ceasar salad and I can confirm that both were very yummy. In fact I probably could have eaten at least two more portions of the mac ‘n’ cheese…
And so it fell to Adam to be the one to choose steak for his main which I’m sure was a real hardship for him…After some deliberation he decided to go for the 8oz Flat Iron which isn’t his usual choice but as it is Son of Steak’s signature cut it felt like the right decision. Served sliced and pink with a pinch of Maldon sea salt it definitely looked the part and I think it’s safe to say that Adam has been converted after the experience. On one of the waitresses recommendations we also tried out the beef dripping gravy which had been described as ‘life changing’ and I can confirm it was indeed very very tasty. Definitely one to try either alongside your steak or simply as a dip for your chips!
Along with the steak Adam also got drawn into ordering the mac ‘n’ cheese but instead chose to team it with the hand cut chips, a solid choice of sides in anyone’s books I think!
I mean I definitely don’t get any points for presentation on this one but that what can I say, I was too busy getting a boomerang for the ‘gram that I let my ice cream melt…
Already feeling pretty full at this point but unable to say no to something sweet to round off the meal I chose to go for the chocolate chip cookie which I was slightly disappointed to discover was simply presented in a packet and not freshly baked but it was tasty nonetheless. Adam opted for the chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce which looked very tempting and we both shared a bowl of the bottomless vanilla ice cream which I had a lot of fun adding a variety of sauces to.
All in all I was really impressed with Son of Steak, we were made to feel extremely looked after and the food was super tasty. It’s a great place to head to whether you’re a steak lover or not so we’ll definitely be back soon, especially for the mojito’s on tap!
